Thursday 21st February 1879

A terrible night - barely slept a wink. It blew a regular Gale and the rain was heavy showers. We all thought that tent would come down, get it resolved in fact. I was this due to the rain come through in my bunk, awareness on the weather page. Turned out and lit a candle, thought it was 2.30. One of us went out there (I don't) and the tent tightened. Then partly dressed and having wrapped me in a bear skin rug, lay down again. A very cold, dull morning turned out a fine cloudless but windy day.

The Dr and I the latter again with us went shooting in the morning - shot of a crane and 5 parrots bought. In the afternoon went back the other way - game very scarce. The Dr shot a snake and a pair of Gill birds, birds small Brown about the size of a choke. After tea Dr Billy and I went to Platypus again. Two and a water rat shot Billy came only one of the Platypus.

Blog Note:-.

The Victorians had a very different relationship with wild animals was a part of their daily lives we today and hunting. Food was a major reason, but there was also a popular Western view that people about animals were superior. Taxidermy was a new science for the Victorians and became very popular, so no home library without a stuffed animal or two was complete.
